Magnificent Me - Self Portraits

Arts organisation: Art 4 All

Schools: Fairfield School, Woodley School and College, and Castle Hill School

A self-portrait project that worked primarily in a monotone pallet of black and white using a range of traditional media as well as digital images and photography. Images created by the pupils used techniques including mark making, portraits and sensory investigation with various tools, implements and technologies combined on large and small light weight willow and paper balls. These sculptures formed part of the Magnificent Me Piazza Parade but the main celebration events for these schools were mini parades/exhibitions in the schools to celebrate the children’s work.

BLOG: Magnificent Me Self Portrait Project at Fairfield School

On Friday just before May half term the sun was shining and the birds were singing as we set up for a celebration parade and art trail at Fairfield School.

Over the last two weeks Jane Howroyd has been working with pupils at Fairfield School to create black and white images exploring portraits, texture and sensory exploration. The range of creativity shown by the pupils has been amazing from traditional painting, drawing and collage to mono-printing and mark making with rollers, balls, hands and even feet!

The work created by the pupils were then combined onto large and small light weight willow/paper balls, bunting and banners which were installed into the school’s meadow to create an art trial for all of the children to be able to see as part of a parade.

The parade was full of music, creativity and fun as well as a great chance for the pupils to see all of their work combined together into the trail.

If you would like to see the balls created as part of the project you can see them as part of the Magnificent Me Piazza Parade on Saturday the 2nd of July from 11am - 3pm at the Piazza Shopping Centre in Huddersfield.
